Deep Listening

Music, attention and the body

Almost everyone has had a moment where a piece of music did something that explanation does not reach. Deep Listening is built around that fact and takes it seriously enough to give it two hours and a dark room.

Music is sequenced rather than played. Silence is part of the composition.

No psychedelic substances are used or provided.

The question it is built around

What happens if I give this my whole attention?

Who it may appeal to

  • People who already know music moves them and want to go further into it
  • People who find visual practices difficult but respond strongly to sound
  • Groups who want a shared experience without needing to perform

How it unfolds

Before

A brief orientation to listening posture, volume and how to signal for a change. Where vibroacoustic equipment is used, an introduction to how it feels before the experience begins.

During

A sequenced listening experience with eyes closed, lying or reclining. Where available, low-frequency sound may be experienced physically as well as audibly. Volume is set with you, not for you.

Afterward

Reflection, and where useful a note of what to listen to again on your own.

Questions

Will I know the music?

Sometimes. Familiarity is not the point, and the sequence matters more than the individual pieces.
