Questions

Direct answers, including to the ones people feel awkward asking.

What this is, and what it is not

Do you use psychedelic drugs?

No. Other Way In experiences are substance-free. No psychedelic drug is provided, administered, recommended or required, and none is needed to take part.

Is this psychedelic therapy?

No. Nothing here is psychedelic therapy, psychedelic-assisted treatment or preparation for a psychedelic session with another provider.

Is this psychotherapy?

No. Other Way In does not provide psychotherapy, counselling, diagnosis or medical treatment, and makes no claim to treat any condition.

This is guided exploration and accompaniment. If you are looking for clinical care, an appropriate licensed professional is the right place to start.

Is this religious?

No. Jeremy's background is in ministry and contemplative practice, and participants are never asked to adopt a belief, a tradition or a framework.

People who consider themselves religious, spiritual, agnostic or entirely secular all take part.

Do I need to be spiritual?

No.

Altered states and expectations

What is an altered state?

Broadly, any noticeable departure from your ordinary baseline of consciousness: changes in attention, perception, sense of time, emotional tone, imagery or the felt sense of self.

By that definition, altered states are common. Absorption in music, the edge of sleep, long-distance running, deep meditation, grief and awe all qualify. Altered does not mean intoxicated.

What makes an experience substance-free?

Nothing is ingested, inhaled, applied or administered. The methods used are practices and sensory conditions: attention, breath, body awareness, imagery, music, silence, and technologies such as light, sound and vibration.

Will I have a psychedelic experience?

No specific experience is promised, and we do not claim to reproduce the pharmacological effects of any drug.

Some people describe experiences that feel unusually vivid or expansive. Others describe deep rest, ordinary calm, or very little that feels unusual. All of these are legitimate.

Can technology really alter consciousness?

Technology does not alter consciousness directly. It changes the sensory conditions around consciousness, and those conditions influence subjective experience.

Rhythmic light perceived with the eyes closed, low-frequency sound felt through the body, and carefully designed audio over headphones all change what there is to perceive. For some people the result is striking. For others it is subtle. None of this is equivalent to a psychedelic drug.

What if I have used psychedelics before?

Many people who come are curious whether comparable depth is available without substances. Prior experience is neither required nor a problem, and we do not ask you to frame what happens here in terms of what happened there.

What if I have never used psychedelics?

Then nothing here assumes you have. A large proportion of participants have no interest in ever using them, including people who are sober or abstinent and want substance-free experiences.

Methods

What is hypnagogic light?

Controlled flickering and continuous light viewed with the eyes closed. Closed eyelids diffuse rather than block light, and the visual system responds to the rhythmic stimulation by generating perceived color, movement and pattern.

The light is not an image. What is perceived is produced internally, and responses differ considerably between people and between sessions.

What are vibroacoustics?

Vibroacoustic systems, such as beds or loungers fitted with transducers, transmit low-frequency sound into the body so that it is felt physically as well as heard.

We describe this as a change in sensory experience. We do not present it as a medical treatment.

What are binaural beats?

When slightly different frequencies are played into each ear, most listeners perceive a slow pulsing beat that is not present in either signal. It is a genuine perceptual effect produced by auditory processing.

Popular claims about binaural beats reliably producing particular brain states or outcomes go beyond what the research supports. We use these techniques as compositional tools in designed listening, not as a neurological intervention.

Do you use breathwork?

Breath practices may be part of an experience, and they are gentle by default. Not every experience involves them.

More intensive breath practices require screening and may be modified or omitted. We make no physiological or medical claims about them.

Do I need to meditate?

No. No prior practice is assumed, and people who have tried meditation and found it frustrating are welcome. Several of the methods here work differently from seated meditation.

Participation and practicalities

Can I stop an experience?

Yes, at any point and without explanation. You retain agency throughout. You can speak, ask for a change of volume or intensity, pause, or end the experience.

Is flickering light safe for everyone?

No. Flickering and stroboscopic light is not appropriate for everyone, and screening is required before any experience that uses it.

Photosensitive epilepsy is the most widely known consideration and it is not the only one. We follow current manufacturer guidance for any device used and will tell you if an experience is not available to you. We do not publish a homemade medical contraindication list. If you have medical questions about participation, please consult an appropriate healthcare professional.

Where do sessions happen?

Locations are being confirmed. Other Way In serves Boulder, Denver and the Colorado Front Range, and specific venues will be listed here once they are final.

How much does it cost?

Pricing is being finalized and will be published on each experience page rather than quoted approximately here.

Is this emergency or crisis support?

No. Other Way In is not emergency care and is not a crisis service. If you are in immediate danger or crisis, contact your local emergency number, or in the United States call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

Something not answered here?

Jeremy reads every inquiry himself. Questions about participation and suitability are particularly welcome before booking.
