The technology
Closed-eye light
Light through your eyelids, and what your visual system makes of it.
Controlled, patterned light shines on closed eyelids. You are not watching anything. What you perceive is produced by your own visual system responding to rhythm and intensity.
- What it physically does
- A light source emits continuous and flickering light at controlled rates and intensities. Light passes through the closed eyelid to the retina.
- What people report
- Many people report vivid colors, shifting geometric patterns, depth and movement, and sometimes dreamlike imagery or a changed sense of time. Some people perceive very little.
- What manufacturers claim
- Makers of professional light systems describe relaxation, meditative depth and 'expanded' states. Those are marketing descriptions, not established findings.
- What independent research supports
- Flicker-induced visual phenomena are well documented, and closed-eye flicker has been studied as a non-pharmacological way of inducing short-term alterations in consciousness. Individual response varies substantially, and the research base is still developing.
In an Other Way In journey
Programs can be gentle or intense, steady or evolving, and are sequenced with sound and vibration into an overall arc.
Flickering light is not appropriate for everyone, including some people with seizure-related or photosensitivity histories. Screening is required. Read about safety.
